Background information

Alfred Walter John TRAFFORD was born at 4 Thompson’s Yard, St Aldates, 23 March 1876. Later he lived with his mother and stepfather at 6 Thompson’s Yard.

On 16 June 1900 Royal Mail Steamship ‘Saxon’ left Southampton for the Cape on her Maiden Voyage. Aboard Saxon, to form Number 13 General Hospital for Active Service, was a detachment of Volunteer Medical Corps, 43 SJAB and a number of RAMC including Lance Corporal Alfred TRAFFORD. He served with No.13 General Hospital at Wynberg and Nourse Deep.

Returning home he continued his career with Foster Brothers Men’s Clothiers, moving around chasing promotion. At the time of his Oxford marriage to Alice CROZIER he was based in Worcester. He served in France during the 1914-18 War, achieving the rank of Warrant Officer RAMC. Retiring in 1938 as Area Manager, Peterborough, he had been devastated by Alice’s death a year earlier, sold his home and joined forces with his only daughter Joan and her family.

The family lived in Peterborough until 1946, moving to Walsham Le Willows, Suffolk where Alfred died in 1952. He is buried in Peterborough with Alice. For many years Alfred kept in touch with his Uncle Walter John TRAFFORD who had emigrated to Canada in 1908. The Maidstone studio portrait shown here was taken in 1899.
