Background information

My Anne SALTHOUSE married James HATHAWAY in Manchester Cathedral on 20 November 1844. Anne was born approx March 1812 in Didsbury, Lancashire and was the daughter of  Anthony  and  Sophia  SALTHOUSE.

After her marriage to JAMES, they moved to Ewelme, where Anne lived until her death in 1906, age 94. She had four children:

  1. Ellen (1846-1879)

  2. George (1848-1893)

  3. Ann (1851-1888)

  4. Edwin (1853-1933)

Ellen married John JUSTINS (b.1840) in Reading on 15 November 1862.  He was a coach builder and, along with two brothers, emigrated to Mayborough, Australia in   April 1864. Before Ellen and the boys Henry and John could join him, Ellen died, so the children were brought up by Anne and James.

Anne was also the village midwife, a job which she did for 60 years. She would travel around the village in a pony and trap. She also was a member of the Wallingford Temperance Society. She lived in Ewelme until her death and her headstone in Ewelme churchyard reads:

In affectionate memory of JAMES HATHAWAY died 24.5.1905 aged 82 years also of ANNE HATHAWAY formally SALTHOUSE widow of the above died 13.12.1906 aged 94 years, She practised as a midwife in this valley for up to 60 years.

Anne was the great-great-granny of Joan HICKS (my mother-in-law).
