Background information

Charles BOWELL was the youngest of ten children born to Samuel and Hannah BOWELL, and the fourth generation of his family to live in Oxford.

His great grandfather, Thomas, born in 1792, came to Oxford from Spelsbury, near Charlbury, but there is a possible connection with both Henry de BOWELLES at Kirtlington in the 13th century and with Nicholas BOWELL of Chesterton in the 16th century.

Charles attended the Bluecoat School where his eldest brother, Samuel, was Master. He married Kate HERITAGE, had two daughters and worked at Lucy’s iron foundry, later running ‘The Crown’ in Canal Street and working as a carpenter for Salter’s Steamers.

He served in France in the First World War with the Volunteer Battalion of the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry.

Charles was a Freeman of the City through his father, a cordwainer. The photograph with his wife was taken on his diamond wedding in 1957.
