Background information

Charles ALLEN took over the running of the eighty-five acre Coscote Farm on the death of his father Joseph ALLEN in 1875. He farmed it with his youngest brother, Moses. The portrait shows him in the uniform of the Berkshire Yeomanry between 1875 and 1880. On 23 January 1879 he married Mary Georgina SKUSE at Cirencester Parish Church.

In September 1896 he moved with his growing family to Down Farm, West Hagbourne. The other picture shows him at Down Farm in 1925 with his prize-winning mangle wurzels. Also shown is his granddaughter, Mary McCLEAN.

Charles ALLEN was my paternal great-grandfather.
