Background information

Eliza SHIRLEY was born on 17th November 1866 at Old Woodstock, Oxfordshire. Her parents were William SHIRLEY (born Wooton, 1831) and Charlotte OWEN (born Kiddington, 1833).

Eliza was the seventh of eleven children born to William and Charlotte. As a young man, William had been a toll-gate keeper in Kiddington, but at the time of Eliza’s birth was a ‘glove dresser’ and lived at Wooton. His family is traced back for four generations to John SHIRLEY who married Alice SCARSBROOKE in Lower Heyford, 24th October 1726.

At age 14, Eliza was in domestic service, and later married Walter TRAFFORD in Lower Heyford in 1893. They emigrated to Canada in 1908.

Eliza died on 25th February 1950 and is buried in Park Lawn cemetery, Toronto.
