Background information

Ernest William ALLEN went to school in East Hagbourne but was brought up at Down Farm in West Hagbourne. After a very short spell at Culham Collage he left to work on the family farm. The portrait shows him in the uniform of The Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars. Although an active participant in the annual Summer Camps, he did not see active service. On 2 June 1915 he married Phoebe Susanna TOWNSEND in Harwell. In 1919 they moved to York Farm in West Hagbourne where they continued farming. Ernest was my paternal grandfather.
