Background information
George Thomas JONES came from an old Witney family; their records date back to the 16th century. They were successful trades people - clothiers, blanket makers, grocers, maltsters, publicans and wine merchants. In 1803 Thomas JONES bought the Blue Boar Inn in Witney, a coaching inn, renaming it The Marlborough Arms. His son Stephen became a grocer and hop merchant in the town, and later owner of the Railway Hotel in Oxford. His son George Thomas (featured here) inherited the hotel and later became a wine merchant at 14 High Street, Oxford. After his marriage in 1885 he built the family home in St Margaret’s Road of specially imported white brick, and it was known locally as The White House.
The portrait was a studio portrait, and the photograph of the house is from the family album. They would have been taken in the early 1900s.
