Background information
Harriet Sophia was baptised 28 January 1844, daughter of Zillah COX, single woman, her birth certificate names Joseph FLOREY as father. Harriet and her younger sister Eliza COX lived at Irelands Cottage, Standlake with their mother Zillah, a seamstress, and their grandparents Thomas and Sarah COX. Thomas was a cordwainer & shoemaker. Nearby at Ansteys Cottage lived Joseph FLOREY, a harness maker.
By 1861 Harriet was a housemaid in Oxford. In 1866 she married John James CROZIER, a cork cutter. They had 10 children, 4 died in infancy. Later, in 1894, a married daughter, Fanny Louisa, sadly died in childbirth. In 1881 the Croziers lived at Cowley. By 1901 they had moved to Friars Wharf, Oxford, where Harriet was working as a laundress and J.J. was still a cork cutter, but "on own account".
The portrait shown here was taken when Harriet Sophia was 18 years old. In the group photo, taken in 1906, she appears with other family at her daughter Lydia's wedding. Harriet died aged 76 and is buried in Osney cemetery.
