Background information

Harry was born on 5 July 1863 at Great Coxwell, Berkshire, the firstborn of James FITCHETT and his wife Maria (née GOLDING). By 1867 the family had moved to Coleshill and in 1871 Harry was a 7 year old scholar and in 1881 an ‘ag lab’.

He married Mary Anne HACKER, daughter of George Higgs HACKER and his wife Mary Ann (née AYERS), on 20 February 1866 at All Saints Church, Coleshill. Between 1886 and 1904 they had 11 children of whom only one died in childhood.  Mary Ann, or Polly as she was usually known, died in March 1914 and on 9 September that year Harry married again, this time to Sarah Ann CHIVERS, daughter of Thomas CHIVERS and Mary Jane (née BURDEN) of Winterbourne Monkton, Wiltshire.  Harry and Sarah went on to raise a further 11 children.

Harry and Polly moved around as can be seen by the birthplaces of their children: Selina 1886 at Haremoor Farm Cottages, Faringdon as was Millicent in 1888; Phyllis was born at Buscot in 1889 (maternal grandmother of submittor); George and Emily were born at Down Ampney, Gloucester in 1891 and 1892 respectively; Elsie was born at Quenington, Glos in 1894; Gladys’ birth in 1896 found the family back at Colleymore Cottages, Coleshill; 1898 has Ernie being born in Langford; Herbert and Albert were born in 1900 and 1902 at Kingsdown, Stratton St Margaret and the baby, Ivy was also born at Coleshill in 1904.

From the time he started work until about 1890, Harry was an ag lab/farm labourer, but after 1891 to 1896 he is shown as a carter. When Ernie was born in 1898, Harry is described as a farm labourer again and later a general labourer. At the 1901 census when the family are living in Stratton St Margaret, Harry is a railway labourer, but when they move back to Coleshill in 1904, he is again working on the land.

Harry died on 6 June 1945 at Wroughton, Wilts, which is where he and his second wife Sarah lived after the mid 1920s.
