Background information

Henry was apprenticed to William Shackleton & Son as a coachbuilder and painter on 11 Aug 1834. He became a freeman of Oxford in 1841. He painted crests on the sides of the coaches and a wooden panel from a coach on which he painted the Royal Coat of Arms is in the possession of the family.

He and his family lived in Beaumont Buildings, St John’s Street, Oxford and eventually they moved to Marston Street in East Oxford.

The image shows the original likeness of Henry and Elizabeth from a glass plate.
