Background information
Hubert Duncan BUTLER was the son of William Henry Gibbs BUTLER (born in Headington in 1857) and Sarah Elizabeth BUTLER (née GARDNER, born in Oxford in 1857). William and Sarah married in Birmingham in 1881.
Hubert’s father William Henry Gibbs BUTLER was the only son of William Henry BUTLER (mayor of Oxford 1836) and his second wife, Elizabeth GIBBS. It is most probable that William Henry Gibbs BUTLER died in 1886 at the age of 29, leaving his wife Sarah Elizabeth and three-year-old son, Hubert.
In WW1, Hubert Duncan BUTLER was injured at Passchendaele, Belgium but survived. He married Minnie STEVENS: they had three daughters but no sons. Their eldest daughter was Florence Minnie BUTLER.
Florence Minnie BUTLER married Donald WILKES, who took part in WW2. He was on Operation Overlord and Operation Market Garden. He was one of the first allied soldiers to enter Belson concentration camp.
Florence and Donald WILKES were my parents.
