Background information

James McCLEAN was born in Hyde near Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire.

He joined the Hyde Equitable Cooperative Service as a boy in the Grocery Department and worked his way up over the next twenty years to a position of great trust.

He enlisted on 16 September 1915 at Hyde with the Wiltshire Regiment. He was sent to the Didcot Army Depot before being posted overseas. Within two years he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant ASC. His war service ended in February 1919 and he returned to the Didcot Depot to work in a civilian capacity.

He had married Alice Maud ALLEN at East Hagbourne Church whilst on leave
31 January 1918. In 1929 they had a bungalow built for £393 5s 4d on a plot in Park Road, Didcot. They had one daughter, Mary, born in 1921.

James worked as a storeholder for twenty-seven years at the Didcot Depot and involved himself in local activities, particularly amateur dramatics and bowls.

He died on 12 April 1958.
