Background information

On the 16 November 1836 James and Selia SMITH’s second son, James SMITH, married Ann PARROTT in the Launton Parish Church.  This younger James loved the life of the farmer and for about 50 years leased a large farm, "Middle Wretchwick", situated between Launton and Bicester.

The couple had ten children, seven of whom lived to maturity. James and Ann were very religious people and were members of the Congregational Church in Bicester.

None of the children wanted to continue with the farming. One son was a missionary in India, two sons went to the United States and one to Australia. The daughters moved away. As the children left home, several grandchildren came to live with them.

James died at Middle Wretchwick Farm on 16 December 1894.

The formal portrait was taken about 1870-1885.
