Background information

John Arnett was apprenticed to Samuel COLLINGWOOD in London on 1 Jan 1788. Samuel COLLINGWOOD subsequently came to Oxford in 1792 to be a partner at the Oxford University Press and brought John with him. They both must have matriculated but no trace of that has been found so far. John lived in Holywell and worked as a compositor in the Clarendon Press in Broad Street, Oxford. In 1835 he went to live in one of the houses at the new Press buildings in Walton Street. Soon after he came to Oxford he became Overseer of the Learned side, then in 1814 Manager of the Bible side, despite being a Baptist.

He was a Freeman elector in a Poll book of Oxford in 1835. He married Elizabeth the daughter of William TIMBERLAKE, another printer at the Press, and had two sons John and Joseph, who followed him as compositors.

He was a strong Baptist and although his children were baptised at St Cross Church, Holywell, Oxford he also registered most of them at the New Road Baptist Chapel.

He died at his house in the Press in 1846 and was interred in the crypt of New Road Baptist Chapel, Oxford.
