Background information

Mark was born 11 February 1878 in Sydenham. Son of Mark CHOWN (Senior) and Elizabeth (née HEALEY), Mark was a blacksmith, and apprenticed to his uncle by marriage, George PHILLIPS.

George was part of the PHILLIPS family of Headington Quarry. Mark took a fancy to Ella May and when she brought in her pony for shoeing, he shoed it backwards so that she had to return to have it re-done! After marriage Mark and Ella lived in Burnham Bucks where he had his blacksmith’s shop and later a foundry, which is still in use today.
