Background information

At the age of twelve, Mary WYETH was put on a stagecoach and sent to her great-aunt Munday at Aston Tirrold. She never saw her parents again. She worked as a servant to the Mundays, who ran a bakery. After her great aunt’s death in 1848, she entered the service of a Coscote farmer, Joseph ALLEN, whom she was eventually to marry by special licence in London because of local gossip.

The portrait was taken about 1900. The photo of her children dates from about 1860. The first son, Charles Wyeth ALLEN, was named for her brother who died in the Crimean War. She was my great-great-grandmother.
