Background information

Shadrach HAYDEN,  son of John HAYDEN and Mary COX, was born in Lyford about January 1829. He married Jane NEALE in Hatford 13 Nov 1849. They had a son Henry HAYDEN, my great-grandfather, and a daughter Anne Eliza.  Two other children died in infancy. After a brief spell in Pusey around 1881, Shadrach and Jane moved to Weald, Bampton where they lived with their grandson Harry WILTSHIRE, his wife and six great-grandchildren.

Shadrach was a folk singer and was visited several times by Cecil Sharp between 1909 and 1914. The songs collected by Sharp have been published and recorded. Three photographs of Shadrach taken by Sharp are in the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library at Cecil Sharp house. Shadrach was also visited by Alfred Williams and is mentioned in Folk-Songs of the Upper Thames.

His wife  Jane died in 1910 after 60 years of married life. In 1909 Sharp noted  "He gets 2 shillings a week with two loaves from the parish, she gets 1/9d and nothing else."

Shadrach died in December 1916 and is buried in Bampton.
