Background information
My great-grandfather William BARRETT’s parents were William BARRETT & Sarah (née GEORGE) who married 12 September 1814 at Cuddesdon. They lived at Steeple Aston until c1820 and then moved to Oxford.
William BARRETT married Rebecca PANTING at Oddington parish church on 27 August 1849. About 1857, William, Rebecca and their young family moved from Market End, Bicester to Ryde on the Isle of Wight. This was when the laying of the tracks for the Isle of Wight Railway began: the first line between Ryde and Newport opened in 1862. William & Rebecca had three sons and one daughter:
•Sarah Ann BARRETT born 1851, died 1852 at Bicester, Oxon.
•William George BARRETT born 1853 Bicester, died 31 July 1878 Isle of Wight.
•Harry Michael BARRETT born 18 April 1856, Bicester, died 19 October 1914, Isle of Wight (my grandfather).
•Robert James BARRETT, born 1858 Ryde, Isle of Wight, died 25 July 1938.
William and his three sons continued to work on the railway: William and son William George for the maintenance department, Harry Michael as a steam crane driver and Robert James was an engine driver.
