Background information

Edwin CROSS was born at what was called The Pest House, at the lower end of Sheep Street in Charlbury, on 3 December 1848. His parents were Robert CROSS and his wife Hannah, née STAIT. Edwin was the youngest of 12 children. He served as an apprentice glover until his marriage to Elizabeth Georgina KEARSEY on
21 October 1872. They were married at
St Mary’s church at 10am and left for America by train at 2pm the same day. They arrived in Tennessee a short time later.

Edwin was employed by Mrs. John OVERTON as an English gardener at Travelers Rest, which is now a historical site in Tennessee. Some years later he purchased a small farm on Hillsboro Pike, just south of Nashville, Tennessee. He died at his daughter’s home near there on 29 January 1936. The couple are buried with most of their children in Mount Olivet cemetery, located on Lebanon Road east of Nashville, Tennessee.

Edwin & Elizabeth had 8 children and are my great-grandparents. The accompanying  picture I believe was made at their 50th wedding anniversary. I am James Edwin CROSS, great-grandson of Edwin and I live in Hermitage, Tennessee, USA.
