Background information

Eliza ALLEN was the 4th of the 11 children of James ALLEN and his wife Elizabeth, née MERCER. James was a blacksmith in Steeple Barton. His family were from Deddington and Elizabeth was born in Duns Tew.

Eliza ALLEN married Thomas GILES in Hampton Poyle on 3 November 1851, Thomas being the son of the innkeeper of The Bell in Hampton Poyle. His brother John and brother-in-law Joseph ELLARD were long serving parish clerks in Hampton Poyle. Two of Thomas GILES’s nieces married James CHARLETT, who had followed both his father and grandfather as parish clerk of Yarnton: first Ann ELLARD, daughter of Thomas’s sister, and then Sarah GILES, daughter of his brother Martin GILES.

Thomas and Eliza  moved to Worcestershire after their first two children had been born in Hampton Poyle. They had 9 children in total. Eliza was a herbalist. Sadly, one of her grandsons burnt her book of simples when she died, in case they were used incorrectly.

Eliza ALLEN was my great-great-grandmother.
