Background information
Evan Arthur HAYWARD was born in Carshalton, Surrey, and baptised at St Mary’s Church in Long Wittenham, then Berkshire, on 5 March 1839. His father was William Turner HAYWARD of Long Wittenham and London, the head of one of the important farming families in the village.
Evan was educated at Marlborough Grammar School and Brazenose College, Oxford, and rowed for the College in 1858 and 1859. He did not graduate.
His liaison with Elizabeth Ann CHAMBERS, daughter of the innkeeper of the Plough Inn, Long Wittenham, produced three children who were given the surname CLIFFORD, all born in London.
He died in Kentish Town, London, on 22 July 1881 and was buried in the family vault in
St Mary’s Churchyard, Long Wittenham on 26 July 1881.
