Background information

Elizabeth Annie ANDREWS (née CHAMBERS alias GAMMON, CLIFFORD or CLIFFORD HAYWARD – known as Bessie) was born in Paddington on 10 June 1853, and baptised at All Saints Church, Fulham Palace Road, 10 April 1859 as Elizabeth Ann GAMMON.

She was the daughter of David Lancelot GAMMON alias CHAMBERS, who became the publican at the Plough Inn Long Wittenham and his wife Lavinia Mary DEARLOVE.

In 1861, she was Elizabeth A CHAMBERS in South Moreton, Oxfordshire, aged 6 with her Grandmother Fanny (Frances) KING née GAMMON alias CHAMBERS.

In 1871, she was Elizabeth CHAMBERS at the Plough Inn Long Wittenham, aged 16.

In 1881, she was Elizabeth CLIFFORD in Prince of Wales Road, Marylebone, aged 26, with Arthur CLIFFORD and three children, Edith, Arthur and Francis. Arthur CLIFFORD is really Evan Arthur HAYWARD.

When her first child Edith Cicely was conceived, Elizabeth Annie would have been 18. Family legend has it she ran away with Evan Arthur HAYWARD to London. He would have been 14 years her senior and his father was head of one of the important farming families in the village of Long Wittenham. Neither family would have been pleased with the union.

On Elizabeth Annie’s subsequent marriage certificate to James Marsden ANDREWS, dated 30 August 1882, she describes herself as “Elizabeth Annie CLIFFORD HAYWARD, aged 28, a spinster” and her father as “David HAYWARD publican”.  James was employed in various positions in the publican/victualling trade.

In 1891, she was in Greenwich as Bessie ANDREWS, aged 32, as a dressmaker.

In 1901 she was living in The Compasses public house, 107 Lower Marsh in Lambeth, London as Elizabeth A ANDREWS, aged 44, with James and several of her Andrew’s children.

She died on 29 August 1902 in Lambeth aged 46 having lived a very complicated life.
