Background information

This detail is from a painting by Charles Allston COLLINS RA (1826-1873) in 1851 called ‘Convent Thoughts’ and the model was Frances Sarah LUDLOW.  She was the daughter of Thomas LUDLOW and Mary Ann BLAY and Aunt of Reverend Thomas Binfield LUDLOW. The artist described her to his friend MILLAIS on 15 January 1851 as ‘a very beautiful young lady.’ She apparently sat for several other sketches.

The painting is hung at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Oil on canvas 32"x23". Frances Sarah later married William BRUCKER on 27 Nov 1856, Ref 3a 887, at St Paul’s Oxford.
