Background information
By the time George William HADLAND was 16, the prospects for agricultural labourers in west Oxfordshire were not good. There was a railway station in his home village, Finstock, and so it seems the teenager took the train to Worcester. There he became apprenticed to a plumber, glazier and decorator. After his apprenticeship, he became self-employed. His move away from farming into the building industry set a trend for his descendants. His only son carried on the painting and decorating business, his only grandson became an architectural technician and one of his great-grandsons became a chartered building surveyor. The portrait shown here was taken at a studio in Worcester at the time of his wedding. Sadly, his bride died only 10 years after their marriage, as a result of a dental anaesthetic. George William, however, lived to be almost 90 years old.
