Background information
There have been HADLANDs in West Oxfordshire since at least the time of the Reformation. Stephen HADLAND was an agricultural labourer who lived at Finstock, on the edge of Wychwood Forest, near Charlbury. He married Kiziah Baylis and they had 11 children, many of whose descendants are alive today. Increased mechanisation and the agricultural depression of the late 19th century drove some of his offspring away from work on the land, out of the district and into new occupations.
