Background information
Henry HUDSON, son of John HUDSON and Ann AYERS, was born in Fyfield
24 Jul 1844. His father died in Jan 1846 and by 1861 Henry was living in Garford with his mother and her uncle Thomas MORGAN, a Chelsea pensioner who had served at Waterloo. Henry married Mary Ann GILBERT in Garford on 31 Oct 1864. Their first two children Martha (1865-1929) and Thomas Morgan (1866-1950) were born in Garford, followed by William John (1868-1931) and Mary Ann (1869-1871) in Roke, Oxon. They moved to Wantage in late 1869, where they had Charles (1871-1943), Henry (1874-1908), Frederick (1876-1938), Sarah (1878-1966), Emma (1880-1978), Andrew, my grandfather (1882-1930), Edith Mary (1885- about 1960), and Albert Edward (1889-1904).
On his arrival in Wantage, Henry HUDSON entered the service of Dean Butler, the famous High Anglican clergyman, as gardener. He continued in the same capacity with Archdeacon Houblon and was for four years at Priors Hold with the Rev. A.M. Littlehales, after which he was for 14 years at the Priory with Colonel Sawyer. He was verger at the Parish Church for over 30 years during the time that Archdeacon Houblon and Canon Ponsonby were Vicars, and retired from that position at Easter 1914. He and his wife celebrated their diamond wedding in 1924 receiving congratulations from the King and Queen and a personal visit from Major Ralph Glyn, M.P., M.C., and the Hon. Mrs. Glyn.
The group picture was taken on the occasion of their 40th wedding anniversary in October 1904. It was shortly after this that their youngest son Albert Edward was killed in an accident on the Wantage Tramway.
