Background information

After leaving school, Henry had a brief period working, like his father, as a gardener.  On 29 February 1892, aged 18 years and 9 months, he enlisted as No. 8963 in the 1st Battalion of the Coldstream Guards.

He was promoted Corporal 4 August 1895, Sergeant 1 May 1897 and Colour Sergeant 9 June 1901.

After serving at home for 7 years, he went to Gibraltar in March 1899 and then in October to South Africa where he served in the South Africa campaign 1899-1902.

Henry was mentioned in despatches in the ‘London Gazette’ 10 September 1901, and awarded the Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for Belmont, Modder River, Dreifontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, and Belfast. He also had the King’s South Africa Medal with clasps for South Africa 1901 and 1902.

He returned to home duty in October 1902 and re-engaged at Windsor 13 January 1904 to complete 21 years service.  However, he died of pneumonia in January 1908, having completed almost 16 years service.
