Background information
The LINDSEY family originated at Cogges. They were farmers and a farm called Lindsey Farm, still exists.
Sophia’s ancestor William LINDSEY was apprenticed to William EELEY, a butcher, in 1794. He married Mary EELEY, they had seven children and he died in 1816. His widow married another butcher, William LODER, but he died in 1817.
The widow LODER and her LINDSEY children moved into Summertown, Oxford, which was just being developed.
Two of the above LINDSEY sons, William my ancestor and John and their descendants continued to be butchers well into the 20th century.
Sophia Harriet had a brother, William Lewis LINDSEY, and he had a butcher’s shop in Walton Street and the covered market. Her son Thomas Lewis BOFFIN was apprenticed to him at the age of 12 and then began the BOFFIN line of butchers.
There is still a John LINDSEY butcher’s shop in the covered market.
The painted photograph was produced for Sophia’s marriage in 1881.
