Background information

Oldest son of James COX, farmer of Whitecross Green, and Martha (née THORNTON). Parish records show that when James’ father, Thomas, was the tenant, James and his younger brother William worked as miller and baker respectively. Thomas was given the tenancy of Oddington Grange, another property of Studley Priory.

Hay dealing activities included a contract with one of the railway companies, and hay was tied and sent to London in wagons. Thomas was a convinced Primitive Methodist and a prominent local preacher, and his initials, TC, can be found on foundation stones of local chapels. He retired to Charlton-on-Otmoor.
