Background information

Walter was born at 3 Ayres Yard, St Thomas in Oxford. He was the son of Thomas and Sara ALLSWORTH and one of their 8 children.

He started work at the age of 14 at the Clarendon Press and then worked at Simmonds brewery.

In 1897, at the age of 18, he joined the first battalion of the Royal Berkshire regiment; he was in South Africa for the whole of the Boer war and returned home in 1902.

On Boxing Day 1903, he married Annie NEWELL from Stanton St John at St Frideswide’s Church in Oxford.

He returned to the battalion for the First World War and then in 1914, he was with Worcestershire regiment until 1919.

Walter worked at the Pressed Steel factory and then the Radcliffe Infirmary as a painter and decorator. Walter and Annie had 9 children and 23 Grandchildren. They lived near the famous Cutteslowe wall.
