Background information
William Henry TOWNSEND was one of twelve children born to William TOWNSEND and Ann Eleanor MOLYNEUX in Drayton St Leonard. He worked as a blacksmith and married Phoebe Sophia DAY in 1875, when the portrait was taken. They had seven children. In 1883 William took over his father’s business of blacksmith and licensee of the Catherine Wheel.
In 1888 he was kicked in the arm while shoeing a horse and the wound turned septic. He signed his will (witnessed by the surgeon and chaplain) just before his arm was amputated in the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford.
He was my great-grandfather.
