Background information

William WILKINS was the second son and fourth child of John WILKINS and Sarah Eliza HARDING.

Ann and William emigrated to New Zealand on the Nourmahal with their four children 20 August 1859 arriving in Auckland 5 December 1859. William worked as a farmer and also worked with animals at the bus stables.  Altogether he had 9 children.

William died 2 December 1912 at Avondale, Auckland. Ann died 2 April 1919 at Dominion Road.

As a footnote, when a cousin was in Australia a man walked up to him and said, “You must be a Wilkins.” He had worked for them and saw the resemblance. My father used to say that Sir Hubert WILKINS the Antarctic explorer must be related because of his likeness to his uncle. There is a belief that other members of the family travelled to this part of the world but we have nothing definite.
