Background information
Joseph was one of four children born in England to William WILKINS and Ann (née SLADE). A further five children were born in New Zealand.
His wife was born c.1855 at Headingley, Leeds, Yorkshire. Together they had eight sons. Joseph worked as a tanner and died as a result of an accident: while cutting branches from a pepper tree he was hit on the head and died soon after.
Hannah died 12 April 1948 aged 92, in Mount Albert, Auckland.
Joseph’s great-grandson Professor Richard John WILKINS is a scientist prominent in gene research.
