Background information
Frederick Thomas McMULLIN, known as Tom, was the seventh of the ten children of James and Harriet McMULLIN (née FROUD). He was educated in the Church of England Boys School opposite the family home.
He told of the visit of the royal visit 13 June 1898, when all the school children (about 1,500 from Wantage and neighbouring villages) stood on platforms in the town square to sing “God bless the Prince of Wales.” They were accompanied by the town band with his father James playing euphonium. After Price Edward (later to be Edward VII) and Princess Alexandra had left, the children were each given a shiny shilling piece by Lord and Lady Wantage.
Between 1903 and 1906 he was a telegraph boy with the Post Office, leaving to bottle and deliver mineral water for Cleggs the Chemist. He was a keen football player and played for Wantage Town. He also coached the boys team.
He left Wantage in 1913, when he joined the Great Western Railway and was sent to South Wales. where he lived until his death in his 104th year
Frederick Thomas McMULLIN was my husband’s grandfather.
