Background information
James was a son of Henry McMULLIN, a Colour Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion 14th Regiment of Foot. On leaving the regiment Henry became the Staff Sergeant of the 3rd Surrey Militia in Kingston Upon Thames. James joined his father as a drummer boy.
James moved to Wantage, the home town of his wife Harriet FROUD about 1882. He worked as a painter and glazier for the Lockinge estate. He wrote and arranged music for the local Volunteers' fife and drum band and was the cook when the Volunteers went to camp. He also played the euphonium in the town band. He helped the butler at Lockinge house when there were large parties there.
James McMULLIN was my husband’s great-grandfather.
