Background information

Harry was my maternal grandfather; I never knew him as he died before my mother married.

Harry attended Whitchurch school and became a painter and decorator after leaving school. Harry married Eleanor Mary ALLNATT in 1901. There were three daughters: Edith Irene b 1904, Eleanor Mary b 1906 and Elsie Gertrude (my mother) b 1908. Eleanor left Harry a few months after my mother’s birth, taking with her the second daughter Eleanor Mary.

Edith and Elsie were fostered out to separate families until Harry re-married in 1912 (London) and they were able to come home. Eleanor had re-married in 1911(Portsmouth).

Harry joined the army during WW1 but his service has not yet been traced. He died aged 49 years of tuberculosis, which my mother believed he had contracted while in the trenches.

Harry’s older brothers William, George and Thomas were members of the Whitchurch fire brigade. They are thought to be among the people shown in the group photo here.
