Background information

Alfred was among the seven children of Alfred George and Annie Herbert CLINKARD. His six sisters were Dorothy G, Florence, Ethel, Hilda, Violet and Elsie.

He joined the Great Western Railway as a lamp boy, and later became a guard on the main line westwards from Paddington during the Second World War before becoming a controller on the GWR/British Rail Western Region. During the First World War, he was in Palestine with Allenby.

His photograph (click on portrait above) was taken during the First World War. His hat badge looks like that of the Royal Engineers, which is compatible with his railway background.
