Background information

Known to the family as Mrs FRANKLIN, Annie was third daughter of five children of John and Mary NOYES, greengrocer of King St, Oxford. Only Annie and her sister Elizabeth survived: her other siblings all died young. Annie was baptised 26 Aug 1844, at St Peter in the East, and her sponsors were her grandmother Elizabeth TAGG, Susan BALDWIN and George PARISH.

Annie lived in the house in King Street with her mother, father, sister and grandparents William (a mail driver) and Elizabeth NOYES. Her father died 6 Feb 1852, followed a few years later by the death of her grandfather William.

Sarah and her sister went to live with their aunts as a servant to them and their family. Sarah was then sent to Eliza and Philip DAVIS who had three children and were living in Cawley Road, St Clements, Oxford.

On 5 Oct 1857, her mother remarried to Frederick SAMMONS, a widower who lived next door to them. He had 11 children, not all living at home at the time of his marriage.

At age 20. on 4 Dec 1864 at St Peter in the East, Annie married Charles FRANKLIN, a widower, son of Gideon FRANKLIN. Charles was a whitesmith, while his father was a blacksmith, and they lived at 35 King Street, St Peter in the East, Oxford. The witnesses at the wedding were William FRANKLIN, his brother, and Elizabeth NOYES, her grandmother.

There were no children. Her husband died in Mar 1872 age 30, while Annie was 28. She never remarried. She was a dressmaker and nurse, and she later lived at 32 Plantation Road, Oxford, where she cared for her mother after the death of her father. She later moved to Leckford Place, Oxford, where she lived with her brother. She died in 1914 at the age of 71.

The photo may have been taken at the time of her marriage as she has a ring on her finger.
