Background information

Henry was born in August 1860, and baptised Wednesday 24 Oct 1860 at St Peter in the East, Oxford. He was the second son of Frederick and Mary Ann SAMMONS where his father was a sexton and cordwainer. This was the second marriage for both Frederick and Mary Ann: Frederick had nine children by his first marriage, and Mary had six through hers. There was another son, William, from this marriage (baptised 26 Sep 1858, at St Peter in the East).

The family lived at 3 King Street, Oxford. Henry was with his parents in the 1861 and 1871 census, but there is no trace of him after this in any census, marriage or death index. No details about his death have yet been discovered.

A family story was that he was killed in a horse race in France, but as yet I have not been able to find out anything about this.

Henry’s father, Frederick, was accidentally killed in Oxford when he was run over by a two-horse tram car. The funeral took place on 7 May 1886, with the accident reported in the Jackson’s Oxford Journal 8 May 1886.
