Background information

Ann WALE was baptised 10 June 1796 at
St Giles Oxford, daughter of Robert and Mary. She was married at St Peters in the East on 23 April 1817, with consent of friends, to William TAGG. They were both of that parish, and the witnesses were Thomas WALE and Elizabeth KEEP. They had eight children Mary Ann, William, Eliza, Henry, Richard, Ann, George, Elizabeth. Not all survived their childhood.

According to Pigot’s 1830 Directory of Oxford, their address was described as “Wm Tagg fellmonger near the Church”. But from 1841 onwards they did not live together. William was a currier from 1851 to 1861, and lived at 4 Magdalen Street; in 1857, an Innkeeper; and a Post boy in 1863.

In 1851 Ann lived at Church Street, St Ebbes. In 1861 she was at 2 Beef Lane, St Ebbes.

On the back of this photo is written ‘granny Salmons mother, granny Higgins grand mother’ and it was taken by ‘Jas Andrews Artist, Studio Royal Institution Swansea’.  The furniture is the same as in the photo of her granddaughter, Elizabeth Lavina NOYES, possibly taken the same day. The images seems likely to have been taken c. 1856-1858.

William died in 1864 and Ann died in 1868, aged 73. The location of their graves is not known.
